🌟 Edward Nash Spong
Edward Nash Spong’s work at Cape Wickham placed him at the junction of maritime safety and natural history. He became superintendent of the lighthouse in 1862, soon after it began operating. Keeping a light on this exposed part of King Island involved an isolated station community, with assistants and their families living beside the tower. Spong also appears in the correspondence surrounding botanist Ferdinand von Mueller: in 1869, the Royal Society of Tasmania recommended asking him to collect specimens of an island plant associated with livestock poisoning, as well as other local plants. A lighthouse keeper could therefore contribute observations well beyond the shipping lanes.
🌟 David Howie
Sealer, hunter and trader David Howie became closely associated with the aftermath of the Cataraqui shipwreck in 1845. His efforts included supplying survivors and helping bury hundreds of victims on King Island. The Tasmanian heritage record identifies that work as central to his reputation for assisting distressed mariners and passengers in Bass Strait. He was rewarded for helping the survivors and later appointed special constable for the island. It is a local story of practical responsibility after a catastrophic loss of life, linking one man’s actions with the graves and maritime history that remain part of the island landscape.
